His current research focuses on computer science and computational science, in particular computational intelligence, computational mechanics and computational materials science. His present scientific interests centre on explainable AI and generative AI.

Professor at IPPT PAN, ordinary member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (corresponding member 2007, ordinary member 2020) and member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Head of the Computational Intelligence and Engineering Team in the Department of Information and Computational Science. Director of IPPT PAN in 2013–2025.

He develops and applies methods of artificial intelligence — evolutionary, genetic, immune, swarm and memetic algorithms, neural networks and fuzzy modelling — in time-series forecasting, optimal design of systems and nanomaterials. He is also concerned with the assessment of intelligent systems against criteria of artificial intelligence and with the social and ethical consequences of AI.

Habilitation 1990 (boundary element methods); title of professor 1993. He has supervised numerous doctoral theses. ORCID: 0000-0001-9083-3003.

His research interests include information theory, neuroscience, applications of dynamical systems and stochastic processes in biological systems, and cryptography.

Director of IPPT PAN since 2025. Professor in the Department of Information and Computational Science; head of the Neuroinformatics Group. Doctoral thesis 1985 (Liouville equation in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space); habilitation 2007 on dynamical systems in cryptography; title of professor 2014.

His work applies Shannon information theory and Lempel–Ziv complexity to neural coding, brain-inspired networks, biomedical signals and the efficiency of information transmission. He has supervised doctoral theses in information flow, neural networks and public-key cryptography.

Research specialist at IPPT PAN in the Laboratory of Smart Materials and Nanotechnology (Department of Theory of Continuous Media and Nanostructures). Professor at Częstochowa University of Technology. Director’s Representative for Equality at IPPT PAN and Project Coordinator of this UNESCO Chair.

Recent work includes multiscale modelling and computational homogenization of cement composites, fracture of steel-fibre-reinforced concrete, and identification of thermophysical parameters of early-age concrete. ORCID: 0000-0003-4262-0315.
